The research-to-venture pipeline as a system

How opportunities, evidence and decisions are tracked from first idea to product, project or venture.

OceanBlu · 4 October 2026 · 4 min read

Problem

A company that explores many opportunities needs to know, at any moment, what stage each one is at, what evidence supports it and what was decided.

Objects

ObjectHolds
OpportunitySource, date, description, accountable lead, current gate
EvidenceFindings with strength labels and sources
Gate reviewThe question, evidence presented, decision and date
RouteProduct, client project, institutional project, partnership, venture, pause or stop
Decision logEvery decision, what it replaced and who made it

Gates

Explore → Research → Validate → Prototype → Pilot → Commercial decision → route → Scale, pause or stop. Each gate has evidence requirements and stop conditions written down in advance.

Rules encoded in the system

  • Every meaningful opportunity has one accountable lead.
  • Nothing changes category without a recorded decision.
  • Stopping is a valid outcome and is recorded with what was learned.
  • Paused items carry a review date.

Status

This is the method OceanBlu uses to run its own portfolio. The register itself is internal.
