Most companies start with something to sell and look for someone to sell it to. We start somewhere else: with a place where something could exist that does not exist yet, or exists only in a weaker form.
That place can be an enterprise, an institution, a public system, a market, a community, an emerging technology or a whole industry. The question we ask is always the same:
What is possible here that does not exist yet, or is not being fully realized?
Opportunity is often already there
The next major opportunity does not always begin with something completely new. Very often it already sits inside an organization's workflow, a market's habits or a technology's capabilities — waiting to be understood, connected and developed.
A manual process that everyone has accepted for years is an opportunity. So is a set of systems that each work well but do not talk to each other. So is a new capability, like AI that can read an organization's documents, which changes what a small team can do.
Understand it deeply
The second part of our philosophy is the discipline. Before anything is built we want to know:
- Is there a real need, gap or opportunity?
- What evidence supports it, and how strong is that evidence?
- Is it worth pursuing at the cost it will take?
- Should we improve what exists, or build something new?
This is the work of Research & Innovation. It is not academic. Every study ends in a decision: continue, route, pause or stop.
Build what makes it possible
Only then does the build start. Technology builds the system. AI builds intelligence into it. When an opportunity is large enough to stand as its own business, Concord — our venture studio — helps turn it into one.
What this means for the people we work with
For an enterprise or institution, it means a partner that will tell you what should exist before telling you what it costs. For a founder, it means a studio that builds with you rather than simply funding you. For us, it means the honest answer is sometimes “don't build this” — and we treat that as a good outcome.
